Daily Madden: Are Drop-Back QBs Headed For Extinction?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Chip Kelly's announcement that he's leaving Oregon for the Philadelphia Eagles is another sign of big changes in NFL offenses. But John Madden said it's too early to say the read-option executed by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and others will fundamentally alter the NFL.
"I don't know that it's going to be here for a long time, (but) I think it will be here for awhile," Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "It depends on what they end up doing defensively to it. If they just make the quarterback run all the time and he takes a lot of hits, and then you decide the quarterback can't take that many hits and get through a year, you're either not going to do it, or not do it as much."
Madden said Kelly will help the Eagles on both sides of the ball.
"He'll help a defensive coordinator more than a defensive coordinator will help him, because he understands that offense and he knows how to defend it...(But) I don't know that anyone in the NFL has the answer to it yet."
The former coach said the best drop-back QBs will always have a place in the NFL.
"The Matt Ryans, the Andrew Lucks, the Peyton Mannings, the Tom Bradys, the Joe Montanas -- those guys are still going to be the stars and be great winners." (7:20)
