Daily Madden Archive: Remembering Hank Stram
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - When longtime Kansas City Chiefs coach Hank Stram passed away a few years ago, John Madden shared stories of his NFL colleague with the KCBS morning crew.
"He was a great coach and a great innovator, and he loved the practical joke," said Madden.
"He always had a joke, he was always trying to get one up on you, and so you tried to get one up on him. It was gamesmanship with the Kansas City Chiefs and with Hank Stram taken to a new level."
Madden recalled Stram using a fake photographer to approach John on the sidelines and listen in on plays while John was coaching the Raiders in games against the Chiefs. "That was Hank," Madden said. "You had to love him."
Madden said he had fun with Stram as well, continuing to let him think, for example, that the Raiders were watering the field at the Coliseum to their advantage when it wasn't true. (4:20)
