Daily Madden: Any Penn State Penalty Is Not Enough
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The NCAA isn't shutting down Penn State football, but is fining the program $60 million and banning the team from post-season play for four years.
"I don't think any (penalty) is enough," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "You can't defend it, and you can't make excuses for it. And anytime you start thinking 'geez these things look tough,' then just inject the victims in there. Then how tough does it look?"
An investigation concluded that Penn State officials, including coach Joe Paterno, stayed quiet about the child abuse accusations against assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
"They let this go on for years and years and years. There's nothing that could be too tough for what they did," Madden said. "I think this thing is going to change the culture of those kinds of abuses just being swept under the rug and hidden."
Coco Crisp's two out single in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Oakland A's their 11th walk-off win of the season, tops in the majors.
"We really are lucky here in the Bay Area to have two very good teams, two teams that are fun to watch," he said. "To have the Yankees come in and (for the A's) to sweep the Yankees, that's big."
Madden said it's all about confidence. "Success breeds success. You do something, and then once you do it, you know you can do it. And then you get to a point where you do it so many times, you expect it to happen. And I think the A's and those walk-offs are probably there." (8:15)
