Daily Madden: An All-Around Impressive Victory For 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers dominated the Detroit Lions on both sides of the ball in a 27-19 victory at Candlestick Park Sunday.
"You just watch the 49ers and they're good in every area," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew."You had the idea last night that in every area - offense, defense, special teams - they were better than the Detroit Lions."
Lions QB Matthew Stafford is known for his late game comebacks, but he had little success against the 49ers.
"The defense just smothered them," Madden said. "Detroit came in and thought they were going to run the ball a little. The 49er defense didn't give them anything there. So then when they go to pass, they couldn't find anything there either. And if hadn't been for that last screen play against the prevent defense towards the end, Stafford's statistics would have been terrible."
The Oakland Raiders fell to 0-2 after a 35-13 loss to the Dolphins in Miami Sunday.
"The Raiders were flat and got eaten up by the heat," said the former coach. "Specifically they didn't tackle well. And they couldn't run it, and they couldn't stop the run, they couldn't tackle. So when you don't do those things, I don't care who you play, you're going to lose anyway. But I think the tough thing was playing on (last) Monday night, traveling across the country (and) playing in the heat of Miami this early in the season... It's still not an excuse not to tackle."
