Daily Madden: Ahmad Brooks' Big Contract

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers have signed linebacker Ahmad Brooks to a six-year contract worth $44.5 million. John Madden told the KCBS morning crew now is the time you'll see NFL teams signing key players as they deal with salary cap limitations.

"I think one of the things the clubs try to do is tie up their own guys," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "Take care of the guys that you have to keep your core, and then expand on that, one obviously with the draft and two through free agency. That's what the 49ers are doing now, just taking care of their own."

New Boston Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine has banned alcohol from the clubhouse after complaints last year's team was distracted by food and beverage. Madden said it's not a big issue in the NFL.

"We never drank in the facilities. I just didn't think that was right," the former coach said. "I don't know that this isn't a baseball thing... In football, the locker room is more to come in, get undressed, take a shower, get dressed and leave more than it is a place to hang around." (7:15)
