Daily Madden: A Disappointing BCS Title Game
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Alabama steamrolled previously undefeated Notre Dame 42-14 in the BCS title game Monday night.
"That was kind of a disappointment," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "You wait so long for that game, and okay now we're going to prove who's number one, you know this is the championship. The time between the end of season and that bowl game I think is really too long for players and coaches."
Following the injury to Redskins quarterback RG III in the team's loss to the Seahawks Sunday, Madden said it's time the NFL establish a new injury protocol.
"We're so zeroed in on concussions, and rightly so," the former coach said. "I think there's another thing right under concussions that you have to watch. When a player is injured -- any part of his body -- where he can't move well enough to protect himself, you have to get him out. You got to get him checked, and I think that's probably the next step."
RG III's knee was in a brace and he was already limping when his knee buckled on a play in the fourth quarter.
Billy Cundiff, the kicker brought in by the 49ers as a possible replacement for the struggling David Akers, worked out at Candlestick Park Monday. Akers wasn't there.
"I don't know that it means anything yet," Madden said. "That's been done forever where you take someone that really isn't acquainted with the stadium (and) have him go over and work at the stadium... You could jump to a conclusion (because) they took Cundiff and they didn't take Akers, but Akers has been there. Akers didn't need that."
The 49ers meet the Packers at Candlestick Saturday in an NFC divisional playoff game. (9:05)
