Daily Madden: A Disappointing And Expensive Pre-Season Game
OAKLAND (KCBS) - The Oakland Raiders lost their first pre-season game to the Dallas Cowboys at the Coliseum Monday night. John Madden was there.
"It wasn't a very good game. Three to nothing. Zero to zero at halftime," Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "When you see a score that's zero to zero, you always have to determine am I watching a good defensive struggle here or am I watching boring football. And I think it was kind of boring football and they really weren't ready to play NFL football."
The former coach said he was disappointed in the play-calling on third down on both sides.
"When you're like third and seven, throw the ball more than seven yards... It just frustrates the heck out of me. I'm thinking 'it's practice, it's a practice game, why don't you at least try it? Why don't you at least try on third down to get a first down?'" he recalled.
Will the NFL ever change the policy of charging full price for pre-season games?
"This has been going on too long, and if they were going to do it, they would have done it already," Madden said. "There's talk to just (play) two pre-season games instead of four...take two of those pre-season games and make them regular season. I don't think that's the answer, I really don't."
Former heavyweight boxing champion Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes died Saturday at age 54.
"Michael Dokes today would be the heavyweight champion of the world," Madden said. "He would be our guy, because we don't have a guy anymore."
Why are there so few top heavyweights? "Kids aren't boxing anymore. The amateurs aren't what they used to be. Look at the (London) Olympics. We used to get a lot of professional fighters out of the Olympics...I don't think we won a medal in men's boxing this year." (9:05)
