Daily Madden: A Bad Draft For Running Backs
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Despite the NFL's continuing dispute with players, the NFL Draft is scheduled to go on as usual. John Madden told the KCBS morning crew that there are several reasons running backs aren't in high demand this year. "Sometimes there are not a lot of running backs that deserve to be first-round picks."
Madden said most teams with top picks will look for a franchise quarterback over a running back, and if there are no franchise quarterbacks available teams tend to look for big linemen.
Moreover, said Madden, "It's been proven that a lot of mid- and lower round and even free agent running backs can be successful."
Longevity is always an issue with running backs, and they aren't as important as they used to be in a league with more spread and shotgun offenses. according to Madden.
For the Madden NFL 12 video game, fans are voting to select the player who will grace the cover. But is the Madden game cover "curse" affecting the voting? John said there are reports that Green Bay fans aren't voting for their own QB Aaron Rodgers, but that fans of opposing teams are.
