Daily Madden: 49ers Will Miss Walker's Versatility
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers lost tight end Delanie Walker on his first day as a free agent when he signed with the Tennessee Titans.
"I would guess they didn't want to lose Delanie Walker," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "He could do so many other things. He could line up tight, he could line up in the backfield, he could line up as a split receiver. He had a lot of versatility that you're not going to get in just a tight end."
ESPN reported that Packers defensive back and free agent Charles Woodson is visiting the 49ers on Wednesday.
"They call him a safety," Madden said.
"(But) where Woodson in the last few years has been really good -- and maybe even before that -- is when he's on the slot receiver. Because he can not only handle that guy and cover him or bump him or do whatever he has to do, but he's very, very good at blitzing from there."
The 49ers may need a new defensive back if All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson signs with the Buccaneers as expected.

Madden noted the free agent frenzy is stressful for team managers, but good for John's NFL video game.
"Last year's model doesn't count anymore," Madden said. "For example, when Peyton Manning goes to Denver, that's big (for the game), because you don't want to play the video game with Peyton Manning in Indy... We got to get Delanie Walker out of the 49er uniform. We got to get Alex Smith out of the 49er uniform." (7:00)
