Daily Madden: 49ers Victory Not Without Disappointment
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 13-6 at Candlestick Thursday night.
"When you see a low scoring game and you see good defense, you're never sure if you're watching a good defensive struggle or you're watching a boring game," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "That's what both these teams are -- they're based on a good offensive line, a good running back, a good running game, and strong solid defense."
The former coach said those traits were enough to secure a narrow victory over the Seahawks, but won't be enough against other top teams.
"At some point, you hope that they expand and their passing is a little more effective. Because that type of football works if the other team doesn't run off a lot of points on you, and if you have good defense, then probably not. But when you run into an Eli Manning or an Aaron Rodgers or a Tom Brady or those guys that can light you up, that can be tough on that defensive team with the running game."
Madden said he was disappointed with the 49ers passing game.
"The defense took away the (49ers) tight end, took away Vernon Davis. Well then doggone it that has to give you something with the wide receivers. Someone has to win some battles there. They can't take everyone away... So you go to the outside receivers, and that didn't seem to be part of it either." (6:15)
