Daily Madden: 49ers, Raiders Look To Build Momentum
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The 49ers meet the Lions in Detroit Sunday in an unexpected match-up between two division leaders. John Madden told the KCBS morning crew that the Lions' success is not a surprise.
"Detroit won their last four games of the season last year, so they've won nine straight games," Madden said. "You could kind of see that one coming. You watch them this year, and they're for real."
The 49ers 4-1 record is a big surprise, John said, given a new coach installing a new system in a shortened pre-season due to the NFL labor dispute.
"What they've done to me is amazing," Madden said. "There was no way that I thought this was possible... Detroit is not going to go undefeated, and the 49ers right now as we speak have as good a chance as anyone to beat them."
The Raiders are coming off an emotional victory over Houston last weekend and face Cleveland Sunday at the Coliseum. John said the Raiders need to be careful to not look past the 2-2 Browns.
"They have a home game against a lesser team, but that doesn't mean anything. They still have to go out and play," John said. "Last week they had all that emotion and the Oakland Coliseum is going to be crazy wild this Sunday. They're probably going to have to calm down early... They're going to be up, but they may be up too high if you know what I mean." (8:15)
