Daily Madden: 49ers Pick Up A Big Win

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – It was a mixed bag for the Bay Area football teams this past weekend as the San Francisco 49ers pulled off an improbable comeback against the Philadelphia Eagles while the Oakland Raiders couldn't keep up with the high-powered offense of the New England Patriots.

John Madden talked to the KCBS morning crew about the wild first quarter of the season in the National Football League.

"The big difference this year is that you had no off season work at all," he said. "Not only practice but free agency and there were no transactions. There was a dead period there. You add all those things up and then the season starts and that's what we're seeing right now."

San Francisco was trailing by 20 points, but pulled off a second half comeback. Madden said that 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh deserves plenty of credit for not letting his squad give up.

"I think Jim Harbaugh is doing one of the best jobs of coaching that I've ever seen in my life. I said before the season that I was surprised he took that job. I didn't think he had a chance," said Madden. "I know it's just four games, but in those four games, he's done an outstanding job."

On the other side of the Bay, the Raiders fell into a familiar pattern, falling behind with costly and untimely penalties in the team's loss to the Patriots.

"When you play Tom Brady, I guarantee you penalties matter. You can't give him one slight advantage. You can't give him one inch of field position," Madden said. "He's as close to a perfect quarterback as there is in the game right now."

Coach Madden said Brady reminds him a lot of Joe Montana in his prime.
