Daily Madden: 49ers Face A Mile-High Challenge
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers are hurting even more on defense as they prepare to meet the Broncos in Denver Sunday night, with linebacker Patrick Willis now sidelined with a toe injury.
"And you're playing against (quarterback) Peyton Manning, who is a scoring machine anyway," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "He's going to score a lot of points. You're playing against him at home in Denver. That doesn't mean the 49ers have an excuse to lose, I'm not saying that. But I am saying that it's a tough battle."
Madden said the 49ers' best shot is to control the ball on offense.
"You have to have a good mixture of run and pass, and you have to get first downs," Madden said. "People say you have to run the ball. Yeah, you have to run the ball and continue to run the ball if you continue to get first downs. The worst thing you can do against a Peyton Manning team is go three and out... Peyton Manning is going to score. I've always said that when you're playing a Peyton Manning you have to go into that game thinking that to win you have to score more than 28 points." (7:40)
