Daily Madden: 49ers-Bears Game Will Showcase Two Top Defenses
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers-Bears game Monday night on CBS 5 will feature two division leaders, two backup quarterbacks and two top defenses.
"It could be a lot like last night's game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "You get a low-scoring game, and you're never sure if you're watching a defensive battle here, or am I watching a boring game?"
Both first string quarterbacks are still recovering from concussions. Colin Kaepernick replaces Alex Smith for the 49ers and Jason Campbell replaces Jay Cutler for the Bears.
"Both those quarterbacks are going to make plays, but can you consistently do it? I mean can you do it where you complete three or four or five passes in a row to go down the field and then get in the end zone? Or can you complete two or three followed by two or three incompletions, followed by a punt... That's the kind of game that I would anticipate, because the strength of both of these teams now going into the game are their defenses."
Both defenses are well regarded for different reasons.
"(I think) the 49ers as far as being stout and tackling and playing well are the better defense," the former coach said. "I think the Chicago Bears, as far as turnovers and scoring, are the better defense... They not only take the ball away, they take it away and score with it." (8:00)
