Daily Madden: 49ers Are A Passing Team Again
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his rejuvenated receiving corps led the 49ers to a 23-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Candlestick Sunday.
"Everyone was down on Kaepernick," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "We do know that he didn't have deep threats and that was one of the problems he was dealing with. You put Crabtree back in there and boom, here's Kaepernick and now they're a passing team. The good thing about that is that they can do both. If (opponents) want to get ready for Kaepernick and Crabtree and the passing game, then (the 49ers) can run the ball. If you want to get ready for Gore and the running game, (the 49ers) can throw it every down...The Rams came in and they were going to take away the run. That was their number one goal. And I think, 'okay, you make that tough, we'll go the other way.'"
Tight end Vernon Davis caught four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown and jumped over a defensive back for extra yards.
"There aren't a lot of guys that can do it," Madden said. "He can do it... Those little cornerbacks don't want to hit those tight ends that are bigger guys, they don't want to hit them high. So they go for them low... So the tight ends instead of letting them just chop them at the knees or below, they just started jumping over them." (6:35)
