Daily Madden: 2015 Will Be Another Year With No Pro Football In L.A.
OAKLAND (KCBS) - The Chargers announced Tuesday they'll play at least one more year in their stadium in San Diego.
John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew that means 2015 will be another season without pro football in Los Angeles.
"It seemed like a few weeks ago that (the NFL was) talking about doing something for this next year, for 2015," Madden said. "When San Diego said that you kind of get the feeling that they called it off."
The Chargers, Raiders and Rams are the three teams considered top candidates for a move to Los Angeles, and Madden said that's still the case. In fact, rumors are still swirling that someone will be playing in the Rose Bowl next year.
"There have been so many false starts -- where, you know, someone was going to break loose, someone was going to do something, there should be a team in L.A., there will probably be two teams. We've been talking about that for years and years and years... It's one of those things that you keep hearing it's a possibility and then it just keeps getting postponed."
Madden said the first step for any team looking to move to L.A. is a stadium plan.
"It's not a stadium being built, it's a stadium committed to being built," John said. "If someone started putting a hole in the ground to build a stadium, a team could move there now."
In the meantime, the Raiders have to reach an agreement to continue playing in Oakland for at least one more year.
"I think they're pretty close to having a meeting and coming up with something with the Coliseum. It's not the best of situations. You have the whole coach thing, you have the Harbaugh thing," Madden said, referring to the Raiders search for a new coach.
"There are so many moving parts. And during this we haven't even finished the season yet. They still have to play a football game, get out there between the lines on Sunday." (6:55)
