Cyclists Cheer Planned Striping Of Golden Gate Bridge Walking Path
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Several safety improvements are coming to the Golden Gate Bridge in the wake of complaints by bicyclists forced to share the eastern sidewalk with pedestrians during construction on the western side of the structure.
With the western sidewalk closed through September due to construction, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition boss Leah Shahum said riding has been chaotic.
"Everyone's looking to the bridge district to really step up and be responsible about the situation," said Shahum. "This is a long-planned project and they could have predicted these challenges, so we're hoping that they do step up to the plate and make sure the conditions are improved.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
Golden Gate Bridge District spokeswoman Mary Currie said the district is paying attention to the needs of walkers and bikers.
"The very first thing that we're going to do is add some striping to the sidewalk," said Currie.
That should happen as soon as we have a non-foggy night to help the paint dry. There will be additional signs too, and bridge cops are being told to help direct traffic in sluggish spots.
