Customers Evacuated After Fire Breaks Out In McDonald's Restaurant Inside San Leandro Walmart
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A San Leandro Walmart store reopened Sunday morning after a two-alarm fire broke out at a McDonald's restaurant inside the business on Saturday evening, according to the Alameda County Fire Department and a store employee.
The fire was an accident and was a result of equipment failure, fire officials said Sunday.
Firefighters received a report of a smoke investigation requested at the store located at 1919 Davis St. shortly after 7:30 p.m., Alameda County fire Battalion Chief Ron Petersen said.
Investigators responded to the store where they found a fire inside the kitchen of the McDonald's, Petersen said.
When the fire started, restaurant employees quickly shut down the electrical panel and notified store managers, according to Petersen.
Store employees helped evacuate customers, he said.
Fire crews went to the kitchen area with a hose line and worked to
extinguish the fire, Petersen said.
The restaurant's sprinkler system was already activated and the blaze was knocked down around 8 p.m., according to fire officials.
Employees and customers were able to safely evacuate out of the building, Petersen said.
About one-tenth of the store was damaged by water from the sprinkler system that had disseminated through the aisles, the battalion chief said.
Fire crews remained at the scene Saturday night to investigate the fire and clean up the water inside the store, he said.
No injuries were reported.
A store assistant manager said the Walmart reopened Sunday around 9:45 a.m.
