CSU To Slash Enrollment Amid Widening Budget Crisis
LONG BEACH (CBS/AP) - California State University is planning to reduce enrollment by more than 10,000 students to cope with anticipated cuts in state funding.
At Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting in Long Beach, CSU administrators outlined strategies to address a $500 million cut proposed in Gov. Jerry Brown's state budget plan.
In addition to the enrollment reductions, university officials said the system's 23 campuses are being asked to reduce their budgets by $281 million. Those cuts could lead to fewer course sections, larger class sizes and less faculty and staff.
Administrators warned of more severe consequences if the 23-campus system loses even more state money than expected.
If CSU loses $1 billion, the state Legislative Analyst's Office recommends that CSU further reduce enrollment, raise tuition and cut staff compensation.
