Crowds Spill Into Streets Of SF To Celebrate 49ers Win
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Crowds spilled into the streets in parts of San Francisco's Mission and Excelsior districts Sunday afternoon following the 49ers' 28-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football Conference Championship Game.
"All of San Francisco will be rooting for the Red and Gold as the 49ers continue their Quest for Six," San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement to CBS San Francisco. "As we celebrate this historic win, I urge all fans to celebrate respectfully and peacefully in our City as we celebrate the 49ers first visit to the Super Bowl in nearly 20 years."
Large crowds of celebrating fans were reported in the Mission District, and at one point a crowd took over parts of Mission Street near Silver Avenue, SFPD Officer Gordon Shyy said.
Police were out in force in those areas, however, and officers had not seen the sort of vandalism and crowds that followed the San Francisco Giants' World Series win in October 2012, Shyy said.
"We anticipated large crowds coming in to the city to watch the game, so we do have substantial resources to address any problems that result," Shyy said.
"We're already planning for the Super Bowl," Shyy added.
The Super Bowl is scheduled to take place Feb. 3 in New Orleans.
