Crossing Guard, 2 Others Hurt In Antioch Crash
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A school crossing guard was one of three pedestrians who were injured in a crash near an Antioch elementary school Tuesday morning, police said.
Antioch police and Contra Costa firefighters responded to a report of a crash at School Street and Delta Fair Boulevard, outside Turner Elementary School, at 8:05 a.m., a fire dispatcher said.
Two adult women and a juvenile boy were injured, police said.
A 2012 Audi A3 Wagon SUV and 2002 Toyota Camry collided, and Michael James Ratliff, 22, lost control of the Audi and struck the three pedestrians who were on the sidewalk, according to police.
The two adult women were transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek to be treated for various broken bones and lacerations, police said. The boy was knocked to the ground and had no visible injuries, according to police.
"One of the crossing guards out there was one of the people injured," county fire Capt. Robert Marshall said.
The crossing guard has been a contract worker for All City Management Services since 2009, according to Patricia Pohl, director of operations at the company.
Ratliff and another man ran away from the car, which had come to a rest on its side in the front lawn of a home on Delta Fair Boulevard, police said.
Police said Ratliff returned to the area and was arrested. He had an odor of alcohol on his breath, according to police.
The second man in the Audi remains at large and his whereabouts are unknown, police said.
School was in session at the time of the crash, said Nancy Billeci, senior executive assistant in the Antioch Unified School District superintendent's office.
Billeci said the three people injured are not students or faculty at the school.
Classes continued as usual throughout the day, according to the district.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.
