Crews Scramble To Fix San Leandro Water Main Break
SAN LEANDRO (KCBS) – A water main break in San Leandro knocked out water service to dozens of homes near John Muir Middle School Wednesday morning.
The break occurred on Leonard Drive, which runs along the side of the school.
"There's a 12-inch water main here and, for some reason, it blew up," said Roy Johnson of East Bay MUD. "I don't know if it's because of the cold weather or age, or ground movement."
The force of the break blew mud and debris all over the roadway.
"The residents here were trying to get out this morning on their way to work or whatever, and I had to turn them around and send them back towards Davis," said Johnson. "There are like 50 or 60 houses over there."
KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:
PG&E was also called out to ensure there were no gas lines in the way before a backhoe could dig up the street to allow crews to get in for repairs. They expected to have it fixed by Wednesday afternoon.
