Crews Contain 30-Acre Wildfire In East San Jose; 2 Firefighters Injured
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Two firefighters were injured Sunday night battling a grass fire that consumed more than 30 acres in the hills near Quimby Road on San Jose's eastern edge.
The fire was reported at 4 p.m. this afternoon by multiple callers including flight tower personnel at Reid Hillview Airport about three miles to the east, said San Jose Fire Capt. Brad Cloutier.
Cal Fire tweeted about the fire burning at Quimby Road and Borden Drive shortly after 5 p.m. The fire had already burned 25 acres at that point.
The fire, being called the Quimby Fire, is drawing a major response from Cal Fire and area fire departments including air support.
Two firefighters were injured battling the fire and were taken to local hospitals after suffering minor injuries.
Cloutier said he did not know what their specific injuries are, or how they occurred.
At 7:17 p.m. Sunday evening, CAL Fire reported that the fire was 50% contained and had grown to more than 30 acres large. Firefighters had stopped the forward progress of the blaze.
San Jose Fire Capt. Brad Cloutier confirmed that the fire was under control as of 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening. No one else was injured in the fire besides the two firefighters and no structures were damaged.
Cloutier couldn't provide an exact acreage total Sunday night.
"We'll know more in the morning," said Cloutier.
