Crash, Attempted Carjacking, Arrest After CHP Aircraft Joins Pursuit From Oakland To Pittsburg
PITTSBURG (CBS SF) -- The California Highway Patrol on Friday night used CHP aircraft to aid in the pursuit of a suspect from Oakland to Pittsburg.
Around 7:50 p.m. Friday, Oakland CHP officers observed a red Mercedes without license plates on northbound state Highway 13 in Oakland.
The officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop, so officers initiated a pursuit, according to the CHP.
During the pursuit, a CHP aircraft was able to get above the Mercedes, and the ground units were able to stop the ground pursuit.
The aircraft followed the Mercedes onto northbound Interstate Highway 680, northbound state Highway 242 and then onto eastbound state Highway 4.
The Mercedes exited the highway at Bailey Road, and Pittsburg police officers were able to successfully spike the vehicle in the area of Leland Road and Railroad Avenue, according to the CHP.
The suspect tried to drive back toward the freeway but crashed into a pole.
The suspect then fled on foot and tried to carjack a vehicle but was unsuccessful, and the CHP and Pittsburg police were able to take the suspect into custody.
The suspect's name was not immediately available.
