CPUC Aims To Boost Use Of Electric Cars In California

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The California Public Utilities Commission hopes to boost the widespread use of electric vehicles in California by unanimously approving new procedures to set up more charging stations. The commission gave the green light for steps to set up more charging stations for electric cars, directing utilities to collaborate with automakers.

"Today we have taken a giant step forward towards the implementation of policies for plug-in, hybrid, and electric vehicles, and towards the state's goal of greenhouse gas reduction," said CPUC President Michael Peevey.

Peevey told of buying an electric vehicle two years ago, and called it a complicated process requiring six visits to his house, which he believes could be a deterrent to some people buying an electric car.

"Indeed, by making it a little cheaper to own and operate an EV, hopefully we will make it possible for more people with moderate incomes to become early adopters themselves," said board member Mike Florio.

The commission affirmed that existing rates for charging electric vehicles are currently adequate.
