Coroner IDs Man Killed By Caltrain In Belmont
BELMONT (CBS/BCN) -- A man who was fatally struck Friday afternoon by a Caltrain approaching the Belmont station has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as San Diego resident Michael Turek.
Turek, 40, was fatally struck by the train at about 3:10 p.m. Friday, according to the coroner's office.
Caltrain officials said Turek was trespassing on the tracks.
"No matter what the circumstances, any loss of life is regrettable," Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said in a statement. "Caltrain is committed to improving safety on the right-of-way through education, engineering and enforcement."
Dunn said Friday's incident was Caltrain's ninth fatality of the year. Five of the deaths have been determined to have been suicides.
Authorities were trying to determine today whether Turek's death was an accident or a suicide.
The death caused widespread delays on the Caltrain system Friday evening. Regular service resumed around 7 p.m.
