Coroner IDs Burlingame Caltrain Victim
BURLINGAME (CBS/BCN) -- A man who was fatally struck by a Caltrain in Burlingame Friday morning has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as Mihael Sullivan.
Sullivan, 49, was struck by Caltrain's northbound train No. 425 at about 10:05 a.m. on the tracks at the Morrell Avenue pedestrian crossing, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.
Whether the death of Sullivan, a transient, was accidental or a suicide is under investigation, according to the coroner's office.
He apparently trespassed onto the tracks at the crossing, which has gates, lights and bells to notify pedestrians of approaching trains, Dunn said.
The crossing is located between the Burlingame and Broadway stations, she said.
The train had about 400 passengers on board when it struck Sullivan. The death caused delays on the Caltrain system for nearly 90 minutes, Dunn said.
The death is the 10th this year on the Caltrain right of way. There were 19 deaths on Caltrain tracks in 2009, she said.
