ConsumerWatch: Programs Aim To Find Summer Jobs For Bay Area Youth
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – While the youth unemployment rate is around 17 percent, there are some programs in the Bay Area helping young people get a job this summer.
Summer Jobs Plus, a partnership between the city of San Francisco and the United Way, is aiming to put 6,000 young people to work at minimum wage jobs and internships. The program is targeted to low-income individuals, but is open to everyone, according to Sarah Mahmout of the United Way.
Eric Chuanroong was able to find a job through the program. He is now spending his summer behind the counter at Starbucks, earning $10.50 an hour, and building a work history with one of the country's biggest employers.
"I'm learning to make drinks, serve food, all the essentials," Chuanroong said.
Current postings include jobs at Ghirardelli, Enterprise Rental Cars, Lowe's, and behind the scenes at the America's Cup. Oakland and San Jose are offering similar job programs.
