ConsumerWatch: Makeup Tutorials Create Online Buzz
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - An increasing number of makeup tutorials aimed at young girls are hitting YouTube.
And 18-year-old Marina Mano is a big fan.
"I like watching them because some of them are inspiring," Mano said. "Some of them just give you really good tips."
Mano said there are many girls to choose from including 25-year-old Michelle Phan who's known as the YouTube queen, with more than 2 million subscribers.
Others, like Kaitlyn Chen, are making the leap from the computer screen to the TV screen thanks to visionaries like Marketing Director Lisa Yokota at KTSF, an Asian American Bay Area channel.
"Once I watched Michelle Phan video's I said 'well that's something that we could easily do, but do it at a higher quality at a TV station,"' she said.
Chen has a popular blog with more 1.7 million hits. Her show "Kaitlyn's Beauty Journal" is broadcast in Mandarin with English subtitles in six markets.
But fans like Mano have a piece of advice. Makeup can become and expensive habit.
"When I was really, really into it I just wanted to buy makeup all the time," she said. "It's definitely easy to get wrapped up in that and to feel like you need more than you really do."
