Construction Worker Killed At Berkeley School Identified
BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- A construction worker who was struck and killed by a big-rig while working at a Berkeley middle school earlier this week has been identified.
An Alameda County coroner's deputy identified 62-year-old Livermore resident Oscar Marquez as the man killed while working on a construction project at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley on Tuesday, a day before school started.
Marquez was laying asphalt on the middle school campus around 12:45 p.m. when a big-rig parked on a nearby slope rolled down and crushed him, according to California Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokesman Peter Melton.
A state safety inspector was sent to the scene on Tuesday afternoon and an investigation into the death is expected to take up to six months, Melton said.
He said Marquez worked for San Jose-based Robert A. Bothman construction company, which does not have any reported safety violations.
