Construction Of Hunters View Housing Development Marks Milestone

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A gathering on a sunny hillside in the Bayview Friday marked the beginning of vertical construction on the long-awaited replacement for one of the worst public housing projects in San Francisco.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee praised a milestone in a federally funded project where most of the work has been done by local contractors.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"It's really been emotional for me because I grew up here in the Bayview," said Darrett Moore, who had been out of work for five years before he was hired to help lay the ground for "Hope SF."

"To see these changes take place, I'm really proud," Moore said.

The city hopes to complete 107 units by March 2014. The plan calls for 800 units in all on the site of the old Hunters View Housing Project.
