Congress OKs $4M To Preserve NorCal Coastal Wilderness
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) -- A huge stretch of coastal wilderness in San Mateo County will remain preserved as open space after Congress approved money to complete the purchase of nearly 4,000 acres.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Congress this week appropriated $4 million to go towards the $15 million needed to buy a rugged coastal area near Moss Beach known as the Rancho Corral de Tierra.
The National Park Service says the property, about seven miles south of San Francisco, will become the southern entrance to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. With the additional land, park officials will be able to connect the Bay Area Ridge Trail with the California Coastal Trial.
Park officials have been working with the Peninsula Open Space Trust, a land preservation group and current owner of the land, for a nearly a decade in trying to obtain the property.
