Concord PD Gives Out Wheel Locks To Deter Auto Theft
CONCORD (KCBS)—The Concord Police Department began offering free anti-theft wheel-lock clubs Tuesday to its residents that own cars of specific makes.
Police Sgt. Sam Staten said "Operation Wheel Lock" will provide 900 Clubs—for free—to residents or employees of Concord who meet certain criteria.
"Hondas, Acuras, Toyotas, Nissans—primarily of the years 1985-2005 are models that we're looking at," Staten said.
The purpose of the program is to educate vehicle owners to their vulnerability to auto theft and offer the club as an additional layer of security.
According to police, the rate of auto theft has actually declined significantly in the last five years, but statistics for last year show that some makes and models remain in high on the list for car thieves.
"We know that no vehicle security devices are 100 percent but the club has been proven to be an inexpensive and effective auto-theft deterrent. We are basically trying to harden the target," Staten said.
The 900 security auto-clubs, that the department plans to give away, were purchased through asset forfeiture funds. No budgeted city money was used.
