College Student, Star Athlete Home On Spring Break Shot, Killed In SF Mission
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A college student visiting family and friends during his spring break was shot and killed in San Francisco's Mission District early Saturday morning, a police spokesman said.
Around 3 a.m., 19-year-old Jacob Valdiviezo was with a friend near the intersection of 24th and Bryant streets when a car approached. A man exited the car, asked Valdiviezo if he was involved in a gang and shot him in his upper body, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
The suspect fled the scene in the grey, 4-door sedan. Valdiviezo was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries, Esparza said.
"The victim was home from college visiting family during spring break when this tragedy occurred," Esparza said in a statement. He and a friend had just returned from a party and were in front of Valdeviezo's home when the gunman shot him.
Friends and family members describe Valdiviezo as an honor student, a star athlete and insist he has no enemies or gang ties.
Valdiviezo graduated with honors from Archbishop Riordan High and was a sophomore at Louis and Clark University in Portland, Oregon. He was studying economics and was a star athlete on the football team.
Police believe the gunman mistook Valdiviezo for a gang member. The suspects in the shooting remain at large.
