Collectors From Around The World Buy Military Vehicles At Portola Valley Auction
PORTOLA VALLEY (CBS/AP) -- Collectors from around the world have snapped up more than 100 tanks and other military vehicles amassed by a Silicon Valley engineer.
Jacques Littlefield's collection was sold during a two-day auction in Portola Valley to raise money for the Collings Foundation, which plans to use the money to build a military vehicle museum in Stow, Massachusetts.
Auctions America, which ran the auction on Friday and Saturday, said Sunday that 119 of the 122 military vehicles were sold, generating $10.24 million in sales. The bidders came from 10 countries and 37 U.S. states.
Littlefield was a Stanford University-trained engineer who collected the vehicles over decades and kept them on his family estate in Silicon Valley. His family donated the collection to the Collings Foundation after he died in 2009.
