Kaepernick, 49ers Reportedly Reach 6-Year, $110 Million Extension
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers will become one of the National Football League's highest paid quarterbacks after signing a new 6-year extension, according to ESPN.
Adam Schefter reported that the 26-year-old Kaepernick signed a deal worth over $110 million and includes a record $61 million guaranteed. It's a big raise over the million dollar contract he was due this year. The deal locks up the Turlock native through the 2020 season.
Since taking over the starting job from Alex Smith midway through the 2011 season, Kaepernick led the 49ers to their first Super Bowl in 18 years after the 2012 season -- losing by three points to Baltimore -- and then to the NFC championship game last season, a three-point defeat to the rival and eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
Entering his fourth year, Kaepernick is a career 59 percent passer who has passed for over 5,000 yards and is closing in on 1,000 career rushing yards. He is 21-8 as the team's starting quarterback.
