Coast Guard Rescues Kite Surfers Near Golden Gate Bridge
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- More than half a dozen people were rescued from the waters of San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge this afternoon after failing winds left a number of kite surfers stranded, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard received a call from a boater this afternoon reporting that there were kite surfers down in the area of the Golden Gate Bridge, about half a mile away from Crissy Field, said Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Liezl Nicholas.
The Coast Guard responded shortly before 5 p.m., along with a boat from the San Francisco Fire Department and two "good Samaritan" boats.
The San Francisco fire boat pulled one person from the water, and the private boats on the scene collected a total of six people, Nicholas said.
It was unclear this afternoon whether all of the people in the water were with the same group, or if numerous people simply became stranded in the water around the same time when the wind died, Nicholas said.
There were no injuries reported, and there does not appear to be anyone else left in the water, Nicholas said.
