Coast Guard Finds Body Of Man Who Went Missing During Fishing Trip In SF Bay

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- U.S. Coast Guard crews Tuesday morning found the body of a man who went missing Monday after the canoe he was in sank near Coyote Point in San Mateo.

The body of 22-year-old Luis Ruvalcaba was reported missing at about 10:20 p.m. Monday, according to Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Jacob Aulner. His body was found in the water.

Aulner said Ruvalcaba, was on a fishing trip with his 22-year-old fiancé, Larissa Castaneda and his 49-year-old father, Guillermo Ruvalcaba-Sandoval. Both men were Daly City residents, according to the San Mateo County coroner. The woman was found alive at around 1:20 a.m., but the father, who was found about a half hour later, died in the hospital.

The three went fishing out of Oyster Point early Monday evening when the 12-foot canoe took on water. Castaneda last saw her fiancé just before sunset when he said he could see the shore and decided to swim to land to get help.

Aulner said they became separated from the canoe after several attempts to bail out the water.

The 22-year-old man was last seen wearing a bright blue life jacket, gray shorts with white stripes and a black jacket with "security" printed on the back in white letters.

Aulner said Coast Guard and fire department crews "saturated" an eight-mile area radius in their search from Oyster Point in South San Francisco to Coyote Point in San Mateo.

"The crew aboard the South San Francisco Fire Marine Unit heard a cry for help while search about one mile off Coyote Point--that occurred about 1 a.m. this morning. The Coast Guard helicopter hovered with a spotlight over the woman and the marine unit boat crew from the San Francisco Fire Department pulled her from the water and brought her to shore," Aulner said.

She was conscious and responsive and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Aulner said.

The 54-year-old man was found unresponsive near Coyote Point at about 1:53 a.m. He was rushed to a local hospital and declared dead at 3:44 a.m., according to the head nurse at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame. The man's name has not been made public pending notification of family.

All three were wearing life jackets.
