Coast Guard Ends Search For Missing Northern California Fishermen
SAN FELIPE, Mexico (KCBS) – The U.S. Coast Guard has ended its search of the Sea of Cortez for seven fishermen from Northern California, who have been missing since their chartered fishing boat capsized and sank on July 3.
The agency said there are no further plans for additional flights.
"Despite the thorough search of the region by Mexican and U.S. search teams, no signs of the missing men were found," said Rear Adm. Joseph "Pepe" Castillo, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard's 11th District in a statement. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of the missing men."
Throughout the case, Coast Guard crews conducted a total of 10 aircraft missions with the Hercules C-130s out of Sacramento and the HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Air Station San Diego.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland said the Mexican Navy is no longer requesting their assistance.
"The report we received was that the Mexican Navy did officially suspend active search operations," said Boehland. "If there's any new evidence that comes to light, the Coast Guard is ready to respond if need be."
Overall, Boehland said they covered more than 7,303 square miles during their search efforts.
