Civil Liberties Groups Concerned Muslims, Minorities Will Be Spied On Under Trump Presidency
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Civil liberty groups in San Francisco are expressing concern increased surveillance on local minority groups could take place under a Trump presidency.
As a candidate Donald Trump called for increased surveillance and scrutiny of Muslims, and groups like the ACLU are concerned local police may help federal agencies spy on citizens.
In 2012, the city passed an ordinance that narrowly defines the counter-terrorism activities police can use.
The ordinance also required the department to report such activities to the Police Commission once a year.
But despite its passage the department has not always complied with the ordinance.
The Safe San Francisco Civil Rights Ordinance was adopted after documents showed the FBI and police were illegally spying on Muslims in the Bay Area.
The Examiner reports the police department is meeting with the groups who have raised concerns about surveillance and it hoped the tone of national politics will puts increased pressure on the department to fully follow the ordinance.
