City Leaders Look To Calm Fears Of Spike In Violence In SF's Castro
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A perceived spike in violent crime in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood is prompting a community meeting Monday evening.
There have been several recent, troubling crimes in the area.
"Most of them have been robberies, some of them may have been gay bashings and, to be very clear, we do still have gay bashings in the Castro," said Supervisor Scott Wiener, who spearheaded the meeting.
However, police have apparently told Wiener that statistics indicate that crime actually is not on the rise; though the nature of such recent crimes - stabbings and pistol-whippings, some in broad daylight - are troubling nonetheless.
Wiener has invited constituents to the Eureka Valley Recreation Center, 100 Collingwood St., San Francisco, at 6 p.m. Monday.
