CHP Vehicle, Bus Hit Walnut Creek Man Walking On Tahoe Highway
STATELINE, El Dorado County (CBS SF) - A pedestrian who was struck and killed on a highway in Lake Tahoe early on New Year's Day has been identified as a Walnut Creek man, Nevada Highway Patrol officers said Wednesday.
Alex Moore, 21, was walking along an eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 50 near the California-Nevada state line around 12:45 a.m. Sunday when a California Highway Patrol trooper hit him, according to the NHP.
Moore was wearing dark jeans and a black jacket when he was hit.
The CHP trooper who struck him, Officer Joshua Varanini, 38, braked and veered to the right when he spotted the pedestrian, but was unable to avoid a collision, NHP officials said.
The impact sent Moore into a westbound lane, where he was then hit by a shuttle bus driven by James Eastland, 38, of Sparks, Nev., authorities said.
Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.
The NHP is investigating the death, which shut down the highway for four hours, and asks anyone with additional information about the accident to contact Trooper Eric Gallagher at (775) 689-4661.
