CHP Says Pair Of Recent I-80 Shootings May Be Related
SAN PABLO (CBS SF) -- Two recent shootings of motorists along Interstate Highway 80 in the East Bay could be related, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP investigators are reviewing evidence that potentially links an incident on the highway on Nov. 2 in San Pablo to a fatal shooting Tuesday night a few miles away in Pinole.
The victims were believed to be targets and were not chosen at random, CHP spokesman Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
In Tuesday's shooting, an Audi sedan was traveling on eastbound Highway 80 near Pinole Valley Road around 11 p.m. when an assailant in another vehicle fired into it, Wilkenfeld said.
Officers found a male driver and female passenger suffering gunshot wounds, Wilkenfeld said. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, while the woman is expected to survive.
The Nov. 2 shooting in San Pablo occurred at 4:20 p.m. near San Pablo Road, about 5 miles west of the Pinole shooting.
During that incident, investigators found a Hyundai Elantra stopped on the shoulder with a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Wilkenfeld said.
He was transported to a hospital in critical condition but is now expected to survive.
Wilkenfeld said CHP investigators are seeking witnesses in both incidents. Anyone who saw anything relating to the shootings or the events leading up to them is asked to call (800) TELL-CHP.
