CHP Names Motorcyclist Who Crashed After Pursuit Across Bay Bridge
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A motorcyclist who was arrested Tuesday after leading authorities on a pursuit across the Bay Bridge and then crashing on city streets in San Francisco has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as 30-year-old Steven Stanford Jr.
The crash was reported at 12:17 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth and Harrison streets in the city's South of Market neighborhood.
The accident ended a pursuit that started when Stanford allegedly drove through the Bay Bridge toll plaza without paying, CHP spokesman Officer Michael Ferguson said.
Officers tried to pull over the motorcycle, which did not have license plates, near Treasure Island but Stanford continued driving west at speeds of up to 80 mph before exiting and turning left on Harrison Street, Ferguson said.
Stanford then allegedly ran red lights and crashed into a large waste-oil truck.
His female passenger suffered a compound fracture to her left leg and was taken to a hospital, according to Ferguson.
Stanford, a San Francisco resident, was also taken to a hospital for observation and was later arrested on suspicion of auto theft, possession of stolen property, felony reckless evading of police, driving on a suspended license and other offenses, Ferguson said.
