Hayward Man Shot, Struck by Vehicles Following Collision on I-80 at San Pablo
SAN PABLO (CBS SF) -- The California Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses to a collision Saturday night between a black Dodge Charger and a silver Honda Civic on Interstate 80 at San Pablo that resulted in gunfire and left a man injured.
Units from the Oakland Area CHP responded to calls around 11:20 p.m. about a collision near the San Pablo Dam Road overpass and a possibly-related pedestrian walking westbound in the eastbound lanes.
An officer found a man "lying on top of the concrete center divider," the agency said in a post on its Facebook account, "who was injured as a result of being struck by one or more vehicles."
The injured man, identified as a Hayward resident, told officers "he had been chased by another vehicle while he was driving his black Dodge Charger" and that "both vehicles were traveling on I-80 eastbound and were traveling recklessly, in and out of traffic."
The man said his car collided with the Honda at the San Pablo Dam Road overpass and that he drove another quarter-mile eastbound before getting out of the car and walking westbound. He said the driver of the Honda got out and fired three to four shots, with one or two striking him in the leg.
"The victim attempted to flee from the other driver by running across the eastbound lanes of traffic and was struck by an unknown vehicle or vehicles, causing major injuries," according to the CHP.
The injured man was hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery, the agency said.
"The westbound lanes of I-80 were shut down for approximately 45 minutes, while the eastbound lanes of I-80 were shut down for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes," with traffic diverted to the San Pablo Dam Road off-ramp, the CHP said.
The CHP Golden Gate Division is investigating the incident and asks anyone who witnessed or has information about it to call (707) 917-4491.
