Girl Injured In Shooting On I-680 In San Jose; 3rd South Bay Freeway Shooting In 2 Days
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A 12-year-old girl was injured by broken glass in a shooting on Interstate Highway 680 in San Jose on Tuesday night, one of three South Bay shootings over two days, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.
The first shooting was reported at about 8:40 p.m. on southbound Highway 680 near northbound Interstate Highway 280. The victim told officers that a white car pulled up alongside her car and a passenger brandished a black gun.
The victim began to yield in the right shoulder, at which point the suspect shot out the left rear window of her car. She then drove her car off the freeway and contacted officers, according to the CHP.
An investigation found that the bullet entered the left rear window, traveled through the car and exited the right front window. The 12-year-old girl was injured by broken glass.
The second shooting happened in Los Gatos on southbound state Highway 17 near the transition to state Highway 85. A man reported that a car was tailing his vehicle, and that he heard a "thud" as the car passed him.
When he arrived at his destination, he inspected his car and found what appeared to be a bullet hole in the rear left door. He opened the car door and a bullet fell to the ground, which he gave to the CHP.
On Monday night, a Milpitas man was shot and killed on Highway 680. He has been identified as 30-year-old Matthew Rios and officers have not released any information about a possible suspect. An investigation into the highway shootings is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (408) 467-5400.
