Southbound I-680 Near Sunol Reopens After Big-Rig Spill
ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- All lanes of southbound state Highway 680 have reopened Friday afternoon near Sunol, following a big-rig spill that caused the freeway to close for nearly five hours.
Around 3 p.m., the California Highway Patrol canceled a Sig-alert for the highway's southbound lanes, just south of Andrade Road, according to CHP officials.
CHP officers initially responded to a report of a big-rig truck blocking the highway's southbound slow lane, just south of Andrade Road, at 8:47 a.m., according to CHP officials.
When officers arrived, they learned a big-rig tanker truck had struck a tow truck and was leaking ethanol, CHP Officer Derek Reed said
The driver of the big-rig was traveling from Stockton to San Jose.
He was uninjured as a result of the crash, according to Reed.
Fire crews from the Fremont Fire Department arrived on scene at about 9:10 a.m. to assess the spill. They then called their hazmat team for assistance, Reed said.
At 9:43 a.m., the CHP issued a Sig-alert for the highway, closing all the southbound lanes and advising drivers to exit at Andrade Road and take alternative streets.
At 10:06 a.m., the CHP decided to close the highway's southbound lanes at state Highway 84. Additionally, the CHP also closed eastbound state Highway 84 to southbound state Highway 680.
Crews were ultimately able to clean up the ethanol from the roadway, and there were no reports of fire as a result of the spill, Officer Reed said.
