Truck Driver Arrested After Slow-Speed Chase On Bay Bridge
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The driver of a box truck has been arrested after a slow-speed chase across the Bay Bridge and along U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco.
California Highway Patrol spokesman, Officer Mike Ferguson, said the incident began in Fairfield on Monday morning.
"This incident started at 8:30 this morning, when the owner of a truck reported it had been stolen and he cited an employee with the truck in Fairfield, and it was parked," said Ferguson. "We got the 911 call and our officers responded to the scene. When we showed up, the party fled onto the freeway."
The owner of the box truck said it was loaded with more than 25,000 pounds of merchandise. Ferguson said CHP officers followed the truck from Fairfield to the Bay Bridge, where it eventually broke down, because of flat tires, on Southbound 101, near the Cesar Chavez Blvd. off-ramp.
"We do have a party in custody. His name is Hector Fuentes," said Ferguson. "He is 46 years old from Fairfield. He is an employee of the company to which this vehicle belongs."
The incident caused a major traffic back-up, but Ferguson said they wanted to take all the necessary precautions, as they weren't sure if Fuentes was armed. Traffic was stopped when the chase proceeded across the bridge.
