CHP Car Crashes Into Hayward Home
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - A California Highway Patrol cruiser ended up on the front porch of a Hayward home Tuesday after a chase through residential Hayward.
Around 10 a.m., an officer driving east on Interstate 580 tried to stop a man in a silver Dodge sedan who was driving at more than 100 mph, CHP Officer Daniel Jacowitz said.
The suspect refused to pull over and exited Highway 580 at Foothill Boulevard, then led the officer on a high-speed chase through residential neighborhoods.
The suspect tried to ram the CHP car several times during the pursuit, Jacowitz said.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
The suspect's car and the CHP officer's car collided near Cottage Park Drive and Mahogany Street. The CHP officer lost control of the car, which crashed onto the front porch of a home.
The suspect then tried to run away, but was caught by Hayward Police. A loaded handgun was retrieved from the suspect's vehicle, Jacowitz said.
The home was unoccupied at the time of the crash, and the cruiser did not break through the exterior walls.
One CHP officer was taken to the hospital with a head injury.
