11-Year-Old Child Rescued From Near-Drowning At Antioch Water Park
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- An 11-year-old boy has been hospitalized after nearly drowning at a water park in Antioch Tuesday, authorities said.
The incident happened at the Antioch Water Park on the 4700 block of Lone Tree Way. The Contra Costa County Fire Department said a call came in at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday of a CPR in progress.
When firefighters arrived, the boy was conscious and breathing, thanks to the heroic efforts of a college-aged lifeguard who pulled him out and administered CPR.
"Our lifeguard staff is amazing," said Nancy Kaiser, Antioch Parks & Recreation Director.
Kaiser said the staff prepares for the possibility of performing CPR everyday. "The Antioch water park lifeguard staff, cashier staff, our seasonal managers train daily," she said. "They prepare everyday for the emergency action plans - they practice emergency drills, they practice the skill sets needed to be first-responders."
The boy was on an end-of-year school trip at the water park with around 200 5th grade students from Lone Tree, Jack London and Kimball Elementary schools Tuesday. He was taken by helicopter to Oakland Children's hospital.
The school field trip was cut short by about an hour following the incident. The student was being held at the hospital for observation and was expected to recover.
